Objective: Create an engaging library resource that your students will love related in some way to your library a movie, ebook, glog, prezi, podcast or other.
Reflection: What steps did you take to complete this assignment?
First I had to decide on a topic and presentation format. Would it be about information literacy, reading or the research process? Then I wasn't sure if I should teach something, I wound up promoting reading. I thought about where I might research the importance of reading and see what other advertisement for reading there are. I didn't find a lot of media or videos encouraging reading. Perhaps people have learned to be more subtle and videos begging people to read have an adverse effect. I like the way mine looks, I could do more to it but it seems like it's reaching or an infomercial for reading. I'm sure you can promote reading with these tool. I researched stuff about reading, looked at other ad campaigns. I also researched prezi some. I looked at other prezis, some on library, information literacy and visual literacy. There was one on visual literacy where I got the design layout. They had a bunch of brightly colored pictures and talked about visual literacy in the sides of the pictures and used the images as examples. I lined up a slew of books (51 of them), chosen at first just for young adult fiction, then chosen for brightly colored jackets, cool pictures, other themes and a few for specific purposes such as a non fiction book or biographies. Getting all this information I synthesized it into a prezi and shared it.
What did you learn?
I learned about why you should read. I learned about some design and using prezi. I learned how difficult it can be to create something thats really exciting.
What might you do differently next time?
Next time, I may even edit it again. Some physical changes, I thought about snaking the writing in a particular direction through the spaces between the books. I could even move some books to keep the words flowing without too many jarring camera changes. I would also do a bit more research and get more academic ideas about the importance of reading. For prezi I would like to group ideas into hierarchies more to use the zooming aspect of big idea/ small idea (or detail). I think it would also be a good idea to make 2 or 3 different ones and decide which one you want to polish.
